About Artwork
Asian Field is an ambitious sculptural work by British artist Antony Gormley. It is part of his Field series of projects, which have taken place around the globe, including Australia, North and South America, the United Kingdom, and Europe. In each place, Gormley uses local clay as the material and invites members of the local community to participate in the making of the work. For this installation, Gormley collaborated with around 300 people of all ages from Xiangshan village (now Huadong Town) in Guangzhou. After a five-day period of intensive work, the team created approximately 200,000 hand-sized figures. This vast installation toured to four of the largest cities in China: Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing, with each display requiring more than two thousand square metres of exhibition space. In each exhibition space, the figures are placed on the ground in a tight arrangement, all facing one direction. Viewers take in the mass of figures from a single vantage point with all eyes set upon them. Feeling the weight of the gaze, visitors are made to reflect on their place in the world and own responsibility for humanity’s collective future.
